JW Marriott opens first property in Spain

JW Marriott Hotel Madrid has opened in the heart of Spain‘s capital city.

Located in Madrid’s Canalejas zone, the new 139-room hotel is housed in a building that was once one of the oldest perfumeries in the city. RockWell Group was tasked with preserving the old and creating the new. The former was accomplished by preserving elements such as the building’s 19th-century wrought iron columns. The latter is evidenced in the use of natural materials and a neutral colour palette to ensure a relaxing environment.

In another nod to the building’s past and the aromas of violets, tuberoses, carnations and roses that fill the city, JW Marriott Hotel Madrid collaborated with the Spanish Academy of Perfume to create a holistic wellness experience.

Guests are welcomed to the property with a traditional violet or rosemary-scented tea served in an artisanal ceramic cup. Then can choose from one of five scents, which will be placed in their wardrobe. Stories about the scents of Madrid are on bedside tables. In the lobby, there is an exhibition featuring antique perfume bottles, books, and essences.

Styled as an urban retreat, the hotel has a large, fully-equipped fitness room and wellness area. It also offers a range on special in-room experiences, including yoga mats and complimentary access to video workouts and meditation practices, and a bath menu with special playlists and customizable light setups. In addition, most suites on the upper floors have large terraces with views of the city (see image top of post), perfect for relaxing in the sunshine.

The holistic, retreat experience continues in the property’s drink and dine options. Michelin-star chef Mario Sandoval has crafted a drinking and cocktail concept that elevates and subtly reinvents local flavour. QU’s menu is an expression in refined Spanish flavor that spotlights ingredients from the property’s JW Garden and goods sourced from local providers. An inventive cocktail menu also highlights local ingredients and aromas such as chocolate, rosemary, and lemon. As a finishing touch, the tableware is inspired by the beauty of perfume containers.

“JW Marriott is at the forefront of the evolution of luxury travel, placing equal importance on mindfulness and well-being as we do on indulgence and comfort,” said Bruce Rohr, global brand leader, JW Marriott. “With these brand pillars in mind, we are thrilled to bring the JW Marriott brand to Spain. JW Marriott Hotel Madrid is an ideal reflection of who we are and what we represent, from its thoughtful design to the bespoke programming crafted with guests’ holistic wellness in mind.”
