Mandarin Oriental today announced that it will manage and rebrand the historic San Clemente Palace Hotel in Venice, Italy.

Situated on its own exclusive five-hectare private island, the historic retreat is surrounded by gardens and the waters of La Serenissima. It is an eight-minute boat ride from the world-famous San Marco Square.

Mandarin Oriental will operate as San Clemente Palace Hotel until its seasonal closure in November 2025, when an extensive three-phase renovation will begin. It will be rebranded as Mandarin Oriental, Venice from April 2026.

“We are delighted to bring Mandarin Oriental’s legendary service to Venice. This historic property, with its unique location and rich heritage, aligns perfectly with our vision to craft immersive experiences that allow guests to connect meaningfully with the destination,” said Laurent Kleitman, group chief executive, Mandarin Oriental. “By adding Venice to our Italian portfolio, we enrich our circuit of destinations across Italy, adding to our current hotels in Milan and Lake Como as well as our upcoming openings in Rome, Cortina and Porto Cervo.”

Design studio Albion Nord will helm the interior renovation. The reimagined property will feature 136 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, blending Venetian charm with Mandarin Oriental’s signature design philosophy.

San Clemente Palace Hotel is set within a collection of restored 900-year old monastery buildings and ancient gardens including a 12th century church. Under Mandarin Oriental’s management, it will offer:

  • four distinctive dining venues reflecting Mandarin Oriental’s approach to gastronomy;
  • The Spa at Mandarin Oriental featuring multiple treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, steam bath, multi-sensory showers and a relaxation lounge;
  • wellness amenities including a dedicated yoga pavilion, an outdoor pool, tennis and paddle courts;
  • and expansive indoor and outdoor event spaces.

“We are delighted to partner with Mandarin Oriental to usher in a new era for the San Clemente Palace,” said Emir Uyar, vice-president, Permak Investment. “As one of Venice’s most storied private islands, this landmark deserves the legendary service and refined hospitality that Mandarin Oriental is renowned for. We look forward to seeing the property’s transformation unfold and welcoming guests to an unparalleled luxury experience in this extraordinary setting.”
