Meliá Hotels International has signed an agreement to open a new hotel under its Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand in Porto, Portugal’s second largest city.

Slated to open in 2021, the 180-key Meliá Porto will be the Spanish hotel group’s 14th property in Portugal and will bring its total number of rooms in the country to 2,600.

The hotel will feature a YHI spa, state-of-the-art gym and a variety of dining options serving healthy cuisine showcasing quality local ingredients.

It will also offer the Meliá Power Meetings concept, which provides innovative meeting spaces equipped with fitness balls, writable walls for brainstorming sessions, in-room relaxation areas and creative coffee breaks.

Located on Avenida de Boavista, a dynamic commercial and residential area of the city, the property will be close to a wide range of entertainment venues and restaurants. It is also very near several of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, including the House of Music (Casa da Mũsica), Peninsula War Monument, the Bom Sucesso Market and the Museu Serralves, a contemporary art museum designed by Zisa Vieira, one of Portugal’s most famous architects.

Porto is world-renowned for its port wines and its historic center, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. More recently, it gained fame as home and inspiration for author J.K. Rowling during the time she was first developing her mega best-selling Harry Potter saga, a story that transfixed the Millennial generation.

Portugal is Meliá’s third largest European market by number of hotels, behind only Spain and Germany. As well as operating properties in Porto, the company has hotels in Lisbon, Funchal (Madeira), Braga, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Covilhã, Montijo, Setubal and Leira. In addition, it will soon be opening on the Algarve.
