Meliá Hotels International and Grupo Puntacana are developing a new property on Punta Bergantín, a new tourism hub in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.
The Spanish hospitality company reports that Meliá Bergantín Beach represents a new example of public-private collaboration focused on sustainable growth and shared value creation. The project stems from a strategic alliance between both hotel groups, Banco de Reservas and Banco Popular.
Punta Bergantín is a government-backed trust, driven by Grupo Reservas and the Ministry of Tourism, created to develop a tourism complex in Puerto Plata, a province on the Caribbean country’s Atlantic north coast. The initiative spans more than 10 million square meters of natural surroundings, which will be preserved through a low-density urban development model.
Meliá Bergantín Beach will be a five-star hotel featuring 400 rooms, a diverse culinary offering, a beach club, pools, a spa, an area for children, and MICE facilities and services.
Speaking at a ground-breaking ceremony for the project, held on October 21, 2025, Gabriel Escarrer, chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, emphasized his company’s commitment to Dominican tourism. “We are proud to contribute to the development of Puerto Plata, combining sustainability, innovation and respect for the environment and its people. This project embodies the quality tourism we believe in – one that creates value for all and is deeply rooted in local communities.”
Frank Elias Rainieri, CEO of Grupo Puntacana, added: “Every new hotel brand strengthens Puerto Plata’s international credibility. Punta Bergantín will be more than just a collection of beachfront hotels – it will be a space where nature, culture, and innovation converge. This project is a gesture of gratitude and hope, and it marks a new chapter in the history of Dominican tourism.”
The project builds on the country’s commitment to combining traditional luxury elements with sustainable ideals in its sustainable luxury tourism strategy, which was announced in 2023. When complete, the Punta Bergantín development is expected to have four to six five-star hotels, 1,500 vacation units, and 2,500 mixed-use units.
