Kimpton Salzburg is expected to open in mid-2028, marking the IHG brand’s entry into the Austrian market.
IHG Hotels & Resorts announced the signing in partnership with tristar Austria GmbH on October 23, 2025. The Salzburg property adds to Kimpton’s portfolio of 12 European properties and a further six in development.
Kimpton Salzburg will be located on the banks of the Salzach River, within easy reach of the city’s landmarks, festivals, and other attractions. It is part of a redevelopment project, led by Midstad, which will also include high-end retail units and other shops.
The design-forward hotel will offer:
- 119 guestrooms, including suites with uninterrupted views of the river and Hohensalzburg Fortress, the largest, fully-preserved castle in Central Europe
- a fitness center and wellness area complete with a sauna and relaxation rooms
- versatile meeting spaces able to host large and small events
“We are excited to expand our presence in the luxury and lifestyle market in Austria with the opening of Kimpton Salzburg, complementing our recently opened Kimpton Main Frankfurt,” said (Mrs) Willemijn Geels, vice-president, Development, Europe, IHG Hotels & Resorts. “As Austria’s second-largest hospitality market after Vienna, Salzburg offers a compelling opportunity for the Kimpton brand to establish a presence.”
Geels explained that together with partner tristar Hotels, IHG now has more than 5,000 rooms open and in development across the DACH (Germany-Austria and Switzerland) region. “We look forward to continuing to grow our portfolio and exploring new opportunities aligned with our vision for the region,” she said.
Christina Locher, managing director, tristar Austria, said: “We are delighted to grow our portfolio with IHG Hotels & Resorts through the signing of this exceptional Kimpton property, marking the brand’s exciting debut in Austria. The milestone represents tristar’s first luxury hotel collaboration with IHG Hotels & Resorts, underscoring our shared commitment to delivering unparalleled guest experiences in premier destinations.”
As of September 2025, IHG has 14 open hotels in Austria across its InterContinental, Hotel Indigo, voco, Ruby Hotels, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Garner brands, and a further five in the pipeline.
