Meliá Hotels International will make its debut in Honduras this December with the opening of its first property on the island of Roatán, one of the Caribbean’s lesser-known treasures.
The new Sol Roatán Media Luna Resort – currently operating as Media Luna Resort & Beach Club – will be a four-star property offering a wide range of amenities. These include a buffet restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, children’s activities, a diving center with private dock, and soon-to-be-added facilities such as a wellness spa and dedicated event and meeting spaces. The resort will undergo a comprehensive renovation to align with the refreshed identity of the Sol by Meliá brand.
Strategically located on Roatán’s tranquil southern coast, far from the bustling tourist areas of the island’s West End, Sol Roatán will offer guests access to untouched beaches such as Camp Bay, mangrove tunnel excursions in Oak Ridge, and boat trips to idyllic spots like Little French Key. Roatán’s crown jewel is its position within the Mesoamerican Reef System — the second-largest barrier reef in the world, stretching from Mexico to Honduras. This marine ecosystem is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife, including sea turtles, rays, tropical fish, and the majestic whale shark, making the island a premier destination for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, commented: “Roatán represents a unique opportunity for Meliá – a rising destination with unparalleled natural wealth and immense potential for family tourism. Through Sol by Meliá, we aim to offer our guests a vibrant, modern experience deeply connected to its surroundings, in one of the Caribbean’s most breathtaking locations. This project strengthens our leadership in leisure travel and reinforces our commitment to sustainable tourism.”
Sol Roatán Media Luna Resort is the result of a collaboration between Meliá Hotels International and HMResorts, led by entrepreneur Piero Dibattista, who has a long-standing commitment to Roatán’s tourism development.
With this opening, Meliá continues to expand its footprint across the Caribbean and the Americas.
