Marriott’s Autograph Collection Hotels brand debuted in Hungary last week with the opening of Dorothea Hotel Budapest, Autograph Collection.

The 216-key property is named after Archduchess Dorothea, who with her partner Palatine Joseph brought significant cultural and economic development to Budapest in the 1800s.

It is housed across three historic buildings in Budapest’s District V: the neo-renaissance former headquarters of United Budapest Metropolitan Savings Bank  (1873), ; the art nouveau former headquarters of the Hungarian River and Sea Shipping Company (1913); and the modernist building with art deco and Bauhaus elements (1937). Local historic preservation experts worked with the hotel to retain the key elements of each era, including a heritage staircase.

The design of Dorothea Hotel Budapest was led by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni. He created a property that honors history and modernity.

Guestrooms and suites are available in two distinct design categories, contemporary and heritage, all equipped with modern amenities. The crown jewel atop the hotel is the Presidential Suite, which features a master bedroom with walk-in closet, ensuite bathrooms, sauna, living room and dining area with a fully-equipped kitchen. It also offers 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows and a wraparound terrace, complete with a jacuzzi and lounge seating.

Other highlights of Dorothea Hotel Budapest include:

  • an inner courtyard that is home to Pavilon Restaurant & Bar and which features a succulent herb wall that pays tribute Palatine Joseph who had a fascination for botany;
  • Anton’s Bar & Deli, which offers artisanal coffees alongside light bites and pastries during the day and transforms into a bar in the evening;
  • two restaurants, both opening in 2024, helmed by three Michelin-starred chef Dani Garcia – BiBo, an Andalusian Brasserie on the rooftop, and Aleli, an authentic Italian osteria on the ground floor;
  • a nearly 7,000-square-foot spa, complete with three treatment rooms, a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and fitness center:
  • and more than 2,800 square feet of meeting and event space across three rooms (two boardrooms, ballroom).

“Each Autograph Collection hotel tells a truly unique story and Dorothea Hotel, Budapest, Autograph Collection is a shining example of this, reflecting the rich history of Budapest through a refined and sophisticated lens. This new opening expands our portfolio of Autograph Collection Hotels into one of Europe’s most fascinating cities,” said Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, vice-president, Premium and Select Brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Marriott International.
