Sandbourne Santa Monica, a 175-room coastal retreat on the famous California beach town’s Ocean Avenue, is now welcoming guests.

Designed by acclaimed Icelandic architect Gulla Jónsdóttir, the hotel is a multisensory blend of natural textures, sculptural elements, indoor and outdoor vibes, and earth tones meant to appeal to all five senses.

Situated with direct access to the iconic Santa Monica Beach, Sandbourne combines coastal relaxation with urban excitement. Inside, it offers a terracotta-toned sanctuary that echoes the natural landscape. The decor features clay pottery and lush plants. A terrace and expansive courtyard is an inviting space with greenery, plush lounge seating and firepits.

Notably, Sandbourne will offer an Artists-in-Residency program that will see a hand-selected group of ceramics artists invited to apply and participate in the property’s internal ceramics property. Guests will be invited to participate in a signature activation, Ceramics by the Pool, a 45-minute pinch pot clay class during which they will craft their own creations with the guidance of a local ceramics artist.

Other property highlights include:

  • a signature scent developed by Bio Alchemy Olfactive;
  • a light-bathed lobby adorned with unique artworks, such as a mural by artist Guerin Swing, crafted from fire hoses from the Santa Monica Fire Department;
  • a heated pool with luxury cabanas;
  • the pool-side Sunset Lounge;
  • a state-of-the-art indoor/outdoor fitness center;
  • expansive event spaces totaling more 10,000 square feet;
  • a private, 200-square-foot dog park for travelers with dogs;
  • an onsite honeybee hive;
  • and in 2025, the addition of a full-service wellness spa.

The culinary scene at Sandbourne is spearheaded by the debut of Marelle, a California-driven restaurant and bar by Santa Monica native and culinary star, Chef Raphael Lunetta. Under the creative direction of Jónsdóttir, the 187-seat venue melds understated elegance with striking, sculptural designs, including handmade ceramic pendant lamps designed by Gulla in collaboration with Liviva home, made by their team in Oaxaca, Mexico.
